Waste not… Want not

Every part of a homestead is intertwined and our new deer ranch is no different. We are slowly finding ways to incorporate the deer seamlessly into our homestead. The more connected every part is the more efficiently we thrive.

We plant a large garden every year that provides us with an abundance of food we consume throughout the year.  Thanks to home canning and preserving methods our fruits and veggies last until approximately the next Jan-Feb. But what do we do with all the waste? The unused parts of the plants?

Instead of tossing those turnip tops, pea pods, carrot tops, watermelon rids into the compost pile this year we let the deer enjoy them. So far they have eaten every garden scrap we have tossed in the feed bunk. Don’t worry we won’t toss just anything at them to eat. We make sure it’s actually something safe for them to consume.

While our deer are livestock they are still very important to us and we want them to be happy and healthy. We take great pride in raising them to be beautiful and strong.
