It’s all about who you know…

And we have got to know some amazing people in the fallow deer world.

Chris and Jody Ezell welcomed us to their deer ranch, Cougar Ridge Whitetails, when they were artificially inseminating their fallow deer. It was a fun day of working deer. Fun? YES! It was a fun afternoon. I found this extremely interesting and enjoyable. I guess this fallow deer journey is truly a joint adventure with my husband and I.

I was VERY impressed at how smoothly these ladies headed to the barn.

We started the afternoon with one rule. “Don’t touch anything!” Artificially inseminating deer is a fast paced operation that requires extreme attention to detail and teamwork.I am happy to report that by the end of the day we proved our worth and were helping where we could. Brendan helped move deer to the stretchers and into the recovery room. Both of us were soaking up all the knowledge that we could. I was even able to bottle feed a fawn so everyone else could stay on task in the A.I. barn.

It all went so smoothly that they made it look easy. The deer and everyone there knew what to do and it appeared seamless. There was one small blip when a doe made it outside the chute and tunnel boxes before she was completely sedated. It was 15 seconds of chaos that was quickly quelled by Brendan and Caleb grabbing the deer. Once she was back in the line up, everything went back to working like clockwork.

It really is all about who you know in life. During this adventure of raising and breeding fallow deer, we are thankful for everyone we have met, especially those that have allowed us to visit them, share information with us and continue to mentor us.
