Never in my wildest dreams would I have pictured myself enjoying a podcast about hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking …… but here we are. My favorite podcast is The Meateater Podcast. My husband and I are avid listeners, especially when we go on long drives. We have learned a lot about conservation, hunting, fishing, gear, and cooking techniques. He even bought me the Meateater Fish and Game Cookbook for Christmas this year. Needless to say we are Meateater fans through and through!
Since my husband is an avid hunter, we always have wild game meat in the freezer to process, prepare and cook. We have gained a lot of recipe inspiration from the Meateater podcast, The Hog Book and now the Meateater Fish and Game cookbook we own. One of the greatest aspects of the Fish and Game Cookbook is the fact that it lists all types of different wild game meat that would be ideal to use for each recipe if you do not have the original type listed in the recipe. Fallow deer meat can be substituted into any venison type recipe. We spent the majority of this past weekend in the kitchen processing and cooking wild game meats with the help of my brother. He also brought some of his own wild game meat to process.

We spent our time on the following:
🌭homemade wild hog/venison hotdogs
🥪 smoked a wild hog ham to slice for lunch meat (recipe from The Fish and Game Cookbook pg 312)
🌮 homemade adobo sauce (The Meateater Fish and Game Cookbook page 314)
🌮 venison shank (deer leg) topped with the adobo sauce in the crockpot that was shredded for taco meat (The Fish and Game Cookbook page 59)
🍔 wild hog tenderloin sandwiches (The Hog Book page 294)
We are definitely proud of the work we put in this weekend to turn wild game meat into delicious meals. We are especially excited about the use of the venison shank as this was a part of deer we just recently started butchering and saving. Believe it or not, this was also inspired by one of the Meateater podcast episodes.

Food isn’t the only reason we enjoy this podcast. We thoroughly enjoy playing along with the Meateater Trivia game episodes. It’s really fun when I actually get a question correct when my hubby does not. I’ll give you a hint, those questions are almost always from the cooking category! Y’all should give this podcast a listen if you are looking for a new podcast to add to your lineup.
