Can you guess why the cows are in the pen with the fallow deer?

There are a couple reasons why letting the cattle graze in the deer pen is beneficial:
First of all, we don’t have enough deer to keep the native grass eaten down. As the grass matures it becomes less nutrient dense, and so allowing the cattle to eat it down keeps it in this nutritious young vegetative stage longer.
Secondly, it has been an extremely dry spring, and our cattle grazing acres are getting eaten down, so the grass in the deer pen serves the purpose of providing supplemental grazing for the cattle.
So more food for the cattle, and more nutrients for the deer!
And making it easier to find fawns in short grass doesn’t hurt either. 😉
