The deer barn is officially functional!

I feel like a barn party is in order to celebrate this accomplishment! Brendan has spent countless hours constructing this barn and BOY does it feel good to have this facility operational!

It started out a little rocky with some miscommunication with the original company that was set to build it in January. When construction finally began in March, a couple months behind schedule it was a little disheartening. But, it progressed nicely due to Brendan’s persistence and skill. It houses our Papa Deer Chute and tunnel boxes that we will use to work our fallow deer. Brendan ensured that the layout of the deer barn allowed us extra space for storage of deer feed and some alfalfa bales. There is also extra space along the south wall for some cabinets and tables. I’m sure we will want some tables and bench working space so that is next on the completion list. We are thrilled to have the barn basically completed and relieved to be all set for A.I. breeding this fall. We even have some extra time to move the girls/deer through the facility several times to get them used to it. I am excited to see how they handle through it.

Brendan single handedly designed and custom constructed nearly all of the holding pens, fencing and alleyways that lead to and surround our deer handling facility. I jumped in to help whenever I could but my help also came along with our four year old son and two year old daughter. Let me tell ya, they sure think they are helpful! In some rare instances they actually were helpful, but in most cases they just succeeded in moving the needed tools to a unique location. Our four year old son was able to spend several hours out helping dad, just the two of them and he loved it! “Gotta get my tools Mom!” he would tell me as he lugged his tool box out the door to catch up with dad. I sure hope those are some memories he holds dear later in life.

Last night when Brendan and I were hanging the shade cloth on one of the catch pens, it really hit me that we did it! We are a deer farm with a functional facility. We are actually an official deer farm operation.  I could not be more proud of all the hard work my husband and family has put into this venture and I CANNOT wait to see what the next couple of years looks like for BRC Fallow Deer.
